On the wings of memory
For more than ten years, battle-plane Yak-38 sails on the Safonov street in Murmansk. Memorable stele to the naval aviation pilots appeared on the territory of the school № 57 in 2001.
- After the death of Timur Apakidze it was decided to assign his name to one of the schools in the city - said the carrier aviation pilot Peter Shapovalov. - And to install a memorial sign in the yard. To do this, we brought here an aircraft from Severomorsk-3.
Severe polar climate rather tainted the façade of the memorial sign. Pedestal rusted, some tiles fell off. But on the eve of the new school year, it is regaining former appearance.
- I was approached by representatives of the school administration with a request to repair the stele - said city councilor Sergey Veller. - Monument to the naval aviation pilots must have a decent look, so we did not lay repairs on a shelve.
Restoration of the pedestal, cleaning it from rust, restoring granite – all these are construction work. But painting of the aircraft is a specific work; a painter isn`t able to perform it. The paint should be applied in a special way. This should be handled by experts.
Now the pedestal has been repaired, only renewal of the aircraft is left. According to Peter Shapovalov, there is already an agreement with the command of the Severomorsk regiment to paint the aircraft. All the work will be finished in a week. And the stele in the memory of the arctic marine aviators will again look decent.
