The Murmansk Regional Art Museum is a landmark of the city of Murmansk if only because it is located in the very first stone building of the city, which is located in the historical center of Murmansk.
On December 19, 1989, the first specialized exhibition hall was opened in Murmansk. This event was timed to coincide with the VII zonal exhibition "Soviet North". On January 17, 1990, the exhibition hall was transformed into the Murmansk Regional Art Museum, and at the same time, paintings, graphics, sculptures, and decorative and applied arts from the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local History were transferred to its funds. The permanent exhibition of the art museum "Domestic Fine Art of the 18th-20th Centuries" consists of several sections: the first of them is dedicated to Russian art of the 18th-19th centuries. The section dedicated to Russian art of the 20th century presents paintings, graphic works, sculptures, and decorative and applied arts.
The collection of graphics in the museum's collection is the most numerous. The permanent exhibition of the museum presents works by Moscow, Leningrad and Murmansk graphic artists. The museum owns a small collection of sculpture.
The Kola North has always had a special appeal for creative people. The painting section, dedicated to Murmansk artists, begins with works by the oldest artists of the region. This section gives an idea of the current state of development of fine art on the Kola Peninsula.
The exhibition of the Murmansk Regional Art Museum is completed by works of decorative and applied art. Visitors can get acquainted with the main northern crafts: wood painting, making clay toys, bone carving, lace-making, birch bark weaving, wood carving. Of particular interest are the Pomor kozuli — dough figures that have been baked on the Tersky Coast of the White Sea since ancient times. The permanent exhibition of the art museum gives an idea of the development of Russian fine art from the 18th century to the present day.
